What We Do in the Shadows Season 2

SPOILERS TOTAL. You've been warned.

301: The Prisoner 2021 September 2
(First watched 2025-02-02) So dig yourself in deep enough with vampire killing (or at least vampire killings by Guillermo that get blamed on you) aaaand get promoted to leader for being effective. Huh.

So is Kristen Schaal joining the main cast? Seems she has a role with the council, and it does look like her head on the promo art from a more recent season. But at least as of this episode seemed like she was still credited as a guest.

This seemed like a pretty weird episode for Colin Robinson. Usually he spends most of his time very flat with just bursts of anger. But this time he was dissing Guillermo in his monologuing, getting in arguments with the other roommates during his monologuing, and... sifting through shit? It didn't seem like doing that was the strange kind of thing he'd normally do for energy vampire purposes, so did he legit fear that Guillermo would be sending messages in his shit?

302: The Cloak of Duplication 2021 September 2
(First watched 2025-02-03) I don't remember ever hearing Kayvan Novak's regular voice, so pretty fun to see him impersonating Colin Robinson, Laszlo, and Guillermo as they each take Nandor's form. He doesn't do a bad job, either.

I (and I'm sure many other viewers) have been curious how energy vampires differ from other vampires, but it's largely been left unsaid. Even Colin Robinson wasn't sure if he was dead or what last season. And now we see he really doesn't know where energy vampires come from. BUT the fact that they're bringing this up and having him discuss it with another energy vampire tells us it's probably going to come up this season.

303: Gail 2021 September 9
(First watched 2025-02-03) Well, there's a weird bit of universe lore: a person can be a werewolf AND a vampire.

304: The Casino 2021 September 16
(First watched 2025-02-03) Hey, different credit sequence and everything for this special Atlantic City episode.

The vampires sure didn't have as much protection from sunlight as I expected. Just... the standard hotel curtains through which plenty of light was coming.

So I think Kristen Schaal is doing a Diana Muldaur thing, being credited as a guest for every episode.

305: The Chamber of Judgement 2021 September 23
(First watched 2025-02-04) I wouldn't say this season is a change for the better exactly, but it's done a wise thing for an ongoing series and mixed things up. Obviously putting them on the Vampiric Council is a change, but specifically making certain characters interested in it gives this season a lot of Nandor/Nadja and Laszlo/Colin, combinations we didn't see much of on their own before.

So Guillermo is not PERFECT at manipulating Nando and Nadja as this episode demonstrates, but not a bad job maneuvering himself onto the Vampiric Council throne.

Neighbor Sean is a real dipshit, throwing away every good chance he gets with some new wild chance.

306: The Escape 2021 September 30
(First watched 2025-02-04) The Baron's back, and... surprisingly good-natured for being half a body buried for a couple years.

The Sire is quite mosntrous-looking, wonder how old he's supposed to be.

307: The Siren 2021 October 7
(First watched 2025-02-04) I am totally here for Dracula/Bakula wordplay.

308: The Wellness Center 2021 October 14
(First watched 2025-02-05) While necessary for a show... the rest of the cast (especially Guillermo) are kind of dicks for not letting Nandor spend his life like he wants. The group of vampires thinking they can be human again are kind of nuts, but they have a right to live their life as they want, yeah? YES, Jan did end up sending everyone to their deaths, but this wasn't yet part of the equation when Guillermo kidnapped Nandor.

I am curious how the people in Jan's group managed feeding while convincing themselves they were human...

The matter of vampire depression is another thing that felt familiar from the Anne Rice books. There even vampires of 1-200 years often started to mourn the loss of the world they knew and wouldn't go on and would either kill themselves...

309: A Farewell 2021 October 21
(First watched 2025-02-05) ...or go into a form of hibernation, or as this show puts it this episode, "Super Slumber".

I appreciated that this episode put some earlier events of the season into new context. Laszlo ripping a page out of the book in the Vampiric Council library wasn't just a wanking joke, but to hide information from Colin Robinson about his impending demise. His willingness to spend so much time with Colin this season was tied into the same. And this episode... yeah, Colin sure did seem to demise, as demonstrated by Nandor accidentally smashing his head post mortem. But uhhh I sure still see Mark Proksch on the art for season 6. But I don't know exactly what this means for the return of Colin Robinson, and for all I know he could pull a Daniel Jackson and be gone from the show for a while.

310: The Portrait 2021 October 28
(First watched 2025-02-06) What an unusual episode for a show like this. Very transitional towards... whatever is next. Almost felt like a series finale, though that would've been more conclusive. But now we seem to be left with three threads: Nandor starting his trip around the world, Nadja with unprepared Guillermo going to London, and Laszlo raising a reborn Colin Robinson.
