What We Do in the Shadows (TV series)

SPOILERS TOTAL. You've been warned.

101: Pilot 2019 March 27
(First watched 2025-01-23) Pretty good. Obviously inspired by the movie, but without the characters or their relationships being exact copycats. Especially having a centuries-married couple is a pretty big difference.

I didn't immediately recognize the Baron was Doug Jones, but I guess there are only so many lanky creature actors who get all those parts.

Biggest fun surprise was Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson. I knew he was on the show and had seem some pictures, but I assumed his role was that of "the human friend" as we saw in the movie. But no, instead he's an energy vampire with his own set of differing rules, and in some ways more powerful than the regular vampires. Able to bore people and drain the energy out of them so much that they're useless as food for the regular vampires.

Tangent to another franchise. Nandor's familiar Guillermo talks about being inspired by Antonio Banderas as Armand from Interview with the Vampire. I saw the movie back in the 90s, but have mostly avoided looking at too much about it since recently starting to read the Anne Rice books. And boy, for a character who is (though not so much in the initial book) established to be in his teens and before reaching full physical maturity when turned into a vampire... age 30-something Antonio Banderas seems a weird fit.

I don't really know how this series goes as a series. I see the next episode at least sees them taking baby steps to taking over the New World as the baron demands, I wonder how long term a thing that is? Well, we'll see.

102: City Council 2019 April 3
(First watched 2025-01-23) Vampires ineptly trying to manipulate the local city council... that's what I'm here for.

103: Werewolf Feud 2019 April 10
(First watched 2025-01-23) Energy vampire vs energy vampire with special effects is good stuff.

104: Manhattan Night Club 2019 April 17
(First watched 2025-01-24) That hat was pretty great. "Take my hat, it's cuuuu" "Yes, it is cool!"

So along with trying to take control of larger areas, the LARP girl turning into a vampire is a continuing thing... wonder where that's headed. She must not be "fully baked" yet, as though she got up from the dead, she wasn't exactly burning in the daylight.

105: Animal Control 2019 April 24
(First watched 2025-01-25) Ahaha, being whacked while in bat form and being trapped by animal control is too good.

Also while we're here, I love how Laszlo specifically always precedes bat form with "Bat!"

106: Baron's Night Out 2019 May 1
(First watched 2025-01-25) Doug Jone's Baron is fun after all. And an undead man who is willing to experience pizza despite the consequences is definitely a kindred spirit. But uhhh, kind of an unpleasant episode ending for him.

107: The Trial 2019 May 8
(First watched 2025-01-25) A lot of guests in this one, from the guys from the original movie to a lot of actors who've previously played vampires as ~themselves, like Paul Reubens, Danny Trejo, and Wesley Snipes.

So they escape from their capital punishment pretty easily. I can't imagine being fugitives will be some long running thing, but will there be consequences? Kind of a worthless vampiric council if you can just escape that easily without consequences.

The Baron was burnt to a crisp and broken in half, but his eyes still lit up before being buried so... only mostly dead.

I do wonder how the characters from the movie got such a notable promotion.

108: Citizenship 2019 May 15
(First watched 2025-01-26) Nandor almost getting American citizenship in 1992 based on the Dream Team, haha. Of course his attempts at citizenship in 2019 are a total bust with his flaky hypnotism.

So Jenna is now a full-fledged vampire, with invisibility to boot. Gotta work on that bat form, though.

109: The Orgy 2019 May 22
(First watched 2025-01-26) That Laszlo is in a century of pornos, I can totally buy. That he wouldn't have shown them off to Nadja until this day? Uh-uh.

110: Ancestry 2019 May 29
(First watched 2025-01-28) I wouldn't have been sure vampire's body remnants would work in standard human DNA testing, but hey, their fiction their rules! Nandor with 200,000 living descendants aaaaand accidentally scares the nearest (a 94-year-old woman) to death.
