A small group of humans, including one woman who spent a thousand years in suspended-but-thinking animation, find themselves involved with a superior intelligence (the Engineers) trying to save the universe. Superior, but stagnant so they lack the imagination necessary to find tricky solutions. They do so, and the universe is saved. - The Trouble with Tycho (1961) - Read 2026. Short, under 100 pages. Somewhat unsuccessful moon prospector in the medium future (at the time of writing anyway) falls into a plan to get valuable salvage from Tycho crater, which people avoid because everyone who goes there ends up missing. Turns out it's the epicenter of some moon lichen found only in that area, along with a big group of "hound dogs", mysterious energy life forms found on the moon. They seem like a remnant of some past visiting civilization, but they only find out so much. Our protagonist and the woman who brought him into the plan get out of the crater and survive, barely.
