This movie combines aspects of two of the better-regarded TOS movies.  Star Trek II had a returning villain from the television series, as this movie has the return of the Borg.  Star Trek IV had a humor-filled (but Earth-saving) fish-out-of-water trip to the past, which this movie also includes.

Followup to IV?

Sometimes I like to think of this movie as the "next generation" to Star Trek IV.  Though the time difference between TOS and TNG depends on which specific times one is comparing, if we go by the difference used in Generations briding the then-presents of both series, it was 78 years.  Star Trek IV's time travel was to 1984, so an additional 78 years would bring things to 2062.  This movie takes place primarily in 2063.
