208: Family 1998 August 14

The end bugs me.  They're talking about possible treatments for Ry'ac, and electroshock therapy comes up.  Fraiser says it's not barbaric if done properly and while the patient is under anesthesia.  Then... they just have Teal'c go shoot him with a zat!?  That's certainly not the proper conditions!

209: Secrets 1998 August 21

Jacob's first appearance... and he's a bit of a dick.  "Ohhh I'm dying of cancer!  I require my daughter to become an astronaut to feel an appropriate level of pride before I perish!"  "But Dad I'm kinda working on something impor"  "I SAID THAT'S ENOUGH.  I'LL SEE YOU LATER."

Really this episode had three pretty decent stories going on.  Carter/dad, reporter wanting to reveal Stargate program, and Daniel/Teal'c on Abydos with temporarily-normal Sha're.

210: Bane 1998 September 25

Fun with Teal'c off base.  Him explaining the painful method of obtaining his "tattoo" is good fun.

211: The Tok'ra (Part 1) 1998 October 2

212: The Tok'ra (Part 2) 1998 October 9

213: Spirits 1998 October 23

Even for a show about ancient astronaut theory, magical native Americans with actual powerful spirits seems a bit cliché.

I like how easy-going Tonane is.  "Can we have our weapons back?"  *shrug*  "Okay."

Some fun Jack/Daniel dialogue here.  "How do I know you're really Daniel?"  "Because."  "Yeah, okay."

214: Touchstone 1998 October 30

215: The Fifth Race 1999 January 22

A followup to last season's Torment of Tantalus, that continues expanding the Stargate universe's history.  We learn the name of the Ancients in this episode, and the similarites of their language to Latin.  Seeing Jack's language slowly morph into it is good fun.  It's also the first time we see the 8th chevron used for intergalactic gate travel.

216: A Matter of Time 1999 January 29

One of the better sci-fi concept episodes, with different parts of the base going at different rates of time.  General Hammond's been off the base to the Pentagon and back over the course of a day, and Jack says "...I thought you were on the phone."

Some things were a bit goofy, though.  If the gravitational effect is intense enough for something in one's hand to move toward the gate, it shouldn't just magically cut off at the hand.  Having people apparently under normal Earth gravity in the control room while immediately outside of it the gate is considered down... doesn't seem it should would that way.

Jack was a bit of a dick to the guy who ended up sucked through the gate.  He held a grudge because he left Jack stuck in an Iraqi prison, when the guy thought he was dead and that saving other people was priority.  Dude's right, that's exactly the sort of decision they had to make in this episode to abandon SG-10.  The SGC's "never leave a man behind" thing makes for decent TV, but isn't always practical.

217: Holiday 1999 February 5

218: Serpent's Song 1999 February 12

This episode creeps me out from a human perspective.  With the goa'uld often being big overblown silly enemies, we often forget that each one of them has a regular person trapped in there.  To get a brief glimpse of Apophis's host able to briefly communicate after thousands of years trapped in his own body only because death is near is... about as sad and depressing as this show gets.

219: One False Step 1999 February 19

This episode seems to be seen as a bit of a low point for many.  For me it's not a favorite, but it's also no Emancipation.  These first few seasons they always seemed to be bringing plagues or troubles back through the gate to Earth, so them faced with doing the reverse was a decent twist.

One disappointing thing is that Stargate is usually pretty good at making their aliens look pretty weird.  I mean, they already have a galaxy full of displaced human cultures so they can go the no-makeup-necessary route all the time, allowing the actual aliens to look pretty weird.  But these just looked like naked guys with white paint on them.

The ultimate problem with the people turned out to be nothing like a virus, but a harmful change in a normal sound due to crashing a UAV into one of the weird plants of the world.  Soo... does that never happen on its own on this world?  Wind and lightning are pretty good at messing up trees on Earth, but these moving fungus things are only bothered by miniature airplane crashes?

On a minor note, there's one time when a couple of the team are planning on staying on the planet, but still walk the others to the gate.  Normally this would be no big deal, but in this case the gate was 10 miles from the village.  So they walked 20 miles to stay?  I guess they must've been worried there was still some unknown danger between.
